Jargon addresses a significant barrier that immigrant tradespeople face when pursuing a Canadian Red Seal certification. For new arrivals who are still expanding their English abilities, traditional language learning applications lack trade-specific vocabulary. Similarly, technical manuals can overwhelm learners with complex terms and no contextual support. Developed in partnership with BCIT's ConnectHER hub, this 15-week development project combines visual learning with interactive exercises. Tailored to construction and skilled trades terminology, the design employs flashcard-based learning, optical character recognition for document processing, and progress tracking to maintain user engagement. By balancing educational standards with an approachable interface, the application ensures users feel encouraged rather than overwhelmed. Using an interactive, goal-oriented approach, Jargon helps tradespeople overcome language barriers that might otherwise prevent career advancement. This facilitates their path toward a professional certification, and improved workplace confidence.
